Getting in Behind

Liberal Redefinition of the Week: To Swing in Behind

As in: The Iranian public has swung in behind the mullahs, leaving reformist MPs profoundly isolated.

Old meaning: a surge in support for.

New meaning: marked decline in voter turnout as result of a progressive boycott of rigged elections.

The recent elections in Iran resulted in a 50.57% overall voter turnout - a 17% drop since last parliamentary elections, with a mere 28% turnout in Tehran.

One imagines that the conservative Iranian clergy would be very pleased with having this travesty of an election described as the Iranian public getting in behind them. And given that Bush actually had an opponent to run against his victory should no doubt be re-charterised as a landslide.
