The Politics of Asylum

Russell Brown wonders why Lianne Dalziel acted in a rather stupid manner, given that the basis of her decision regarding the Sri Lankan girl was perfectly legitimate.

The clue is that she was aiming at the lawyers involved. The present asylum laws have attracted a type of activist lawyer with particular political agendas. The Zaoui case is another example. This has greatly aggravated the Government which sees itself under attack by a group using refugees as cannon fodder. It is difficult to combat the sort of moral and emotional blackmail these people are using so I am not surprised that Dalziel should eventually lose it.
