Clutching at straws

In The Guardian Jonathan Steele believes that sociologists will save America claiming that "The profession's centre of gravity is moving left".

This is evidence of just how desperate some on the Left are. Sociology has been Left-leaning from the very start. That a group of sociologists get together to proclaim the end of capitalism and listen to extremists such as Arundhati Roy is nothing unusual and certainly no indication of any shift in American politics. But Steele lives in hope.

Steele maintains there is a "lack of serious debate" in the US, which would come as some surprise to many Democrats who are energetically opposing Bush. But what Steel means is that the debate is not what he would like. Its a form of Left-wing narcissism.
