Heads I win, tails you lose

That's the the sum of Not Right Turn's comment regarding US interest in Darfur:
As for real humanitarian crises, like Darfur, they don't give a shit.
It's an interesting characterisation of the US action on Darfur. Lets look at the ways that the US has not given a shit.

1. The US negotiated a settlement between the rebels and the government. It did not last but it was an attempt to find a peaceful resolution.

2. The US has gone to the UN, in a particularly multilateral manner, to seek the international community's support in placing pressure on the Sudanese government.

3. The US has been encouraging African states to take part in peacekeeping activities.

So if that is not giving a shit what would Not Right Turn like to see happen? The US send troops? If they did then one can easily imagine what NRT's reaction would be.

It's hard to see where this sort of argument leads other than round in circles.

It's not the US that doesn't give a shit - it's the NeoCon clique, who cloaked themselves in humanitarianism over Iraq and who are now silent on Darfur. Hit Google News. Enter the names of prominant advocates for the invasion of Iraq - Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, Cheney, Rice - and "Darfur". Read the headline count. They don't give a rat's arse - they leave that sort of thing to Powell. And to his credit, he has done a great deal, pretty much all he can.

Perhaps if you and your ilk NRT had not given the US such a hard time over Iraq the world would have entered a new era and US forces would be lining up the Sudanese generals. But you want to have it both ways. Hypocrisy is the name for it. Rumsfield has never been an idealistic neocon. but commit him to action and he will get it done. Then he will talk about it (maybe) in the media afterward. Just spare us the sermonising.
