Stupidity and Politics

I agree with Aaronovitch -

You don't have to be dumb to vote for Bush

and disagree with

Crooked Timbers

It does the Left no good to believe, falsely, that people who vote for Bush are stupid. The argument cuts both ways, if voting for Bush is irrational then so is voting for Kerry, for the same reasons, to quote Crooked Timbers:
...that it is a highly characteristic feature of ideological beliefs that they involve extrapolation by the believing subject from the immediate and local features of their experience to beliefs about the social world as a whole.
If one accepts that that is the way conservatives form their political opinion then one is forced to accept that liberals do the same. Which gets us nowhere.
