The Debates - the influence of TV

Slate is reporting that although Kerry won all three TV debates this has not corresponded with any overall increase in his polling.

One possibility is that the viewing public consider the debates as a form of performance or entertainment, like baseball, and that underlying support is not swayed much.

The article also notes that 64% of people thought that Kerry's remarks about Mary Cheney's sexuality were inappropriate. Whoever advised Kerry to play dirty tricks should be sacked.

UPDATE: some commentators are maintaining that if its OK for Cheney to have mentioned his daughters sexuality then its OK for the Dems to play on the issue. I don't think so. Some things are better used as shields, not swords.
