Gordan McLauchlan - raving idiot

I'm a bit late on this one but could not resist, no-one else seems to have picked this up.

You know that Herbert Ford guy McLauchlan mentions in support of his mad "Christians Destroy Pitcairn Is" theory?

Turns out (former missionary) Herbert Ford's Pitcairn Island Study Center is based at the Pacific Union College in San Francisco. The Pacific Union College is run by The Seventh Day Adventist Church -

Church leader says Pitcairn sex trials will destroy Pacific island

The Seventh Day Adventist Church just happens to be the majority faith on Pitcairn. So the situation is the complete reverse of McLauchlan's view. The puritanical, conservative Christians are on the same side as McLauchlan - protecting child abusers.

McLauchlan is not just a complete crank but an apologist for a Church that is covering for pedophiles.

I read his argument more as:

"This is a small community that has evolved devoid of influence from the outside world, and should not let normal accepted values be imposed on them."

His biggest criticisms seem to be reserved for British civil servants who stubbornly stick to British law. (Not saying I agree with that argument)

Anyway, given their supposed isolation, isn't it amazing how close to an Australian accent those who have been interviewed this week posess?

And to go off on a tangent, does anyone out there know what a Falkland Island accent sounds like?? I've even e-mailed their tourism board on this issue, and have never had an answer.

Leaving aside the interesting ambiguity of "Christians will destroy Pitcairn Island" I couldn't agree with you more. Ambiguity about age of consent might be a valid argument if we were talking about sex between a 17 year old boy and a 15 year old girl but not when the abuser is in his fories. Or the victim is under 12.
The Ruatoria (eg) chapter of the Mongrel Mob is a larger and more diverse community than Pitcairn Island. I do not hear Gordon McLauchlan (or anyone else) suggesting that they should be immune from rape charges on the grounds that it is part of their culture.

Fair enough.

However, I think his argument is more along the lines that it is BECAUSE the community is so small and isolated that they should have more leniency when it comes to the way they live their lives. (Lets not go into the immoraility of what they have done; those of us who live in the real world would dispute that)

Anyway, any help on the Falkland Island accent issue?
