John Tamihere

I agree with Colin James - Why we can't afford to lose the voice of Tamihere

Tamihere has gone down in my estimation, looking a little too opportunistic, ambitious and arrogant. He has probably lost the opportunity to become PM which could be punishment enough.

But in terms of race relations in NZ he has come to represent an important voice for moving ahead; that does not romanticise tradtional Maori society in the way that Turia does. Which is presumably why Clark puts up with him.

I couldn't agree more.

I think other parties, particularly on the right, realise how important he is in making Labour appeal to the centre (and to males, for that matter) and that's why they are so desparate to get him.
